Following our last remote meeting with Cindy Drozda demonstrating her famous finial box, we thought it would be great to continue the box theme but with a different style box. So, for our Watch Party Video this month we will feature Jimmy Clewes demonstrating his famous Square Lidded Box!
This 90-minute club video was recorded during Jimmy's 2013 visit to WGNC and has not been seen before.
Jimmy takes us through his steps of design and how he achieves creating such beautiful pieces. He? discusses the tools he uses, how to sharpen them and the importance of different bevels. He shows what cuts to make for different outcomes, how to make these cuts and why all of this is important to the finished piece.
Jimmy is a great instructor as you may know and weaves in his English humor with his sharing of experience and wisdom. This brings together the sharing of different ideas and methods of turning and expands our horizons in a very entertaining way. We hope you will join us Thursday evening June 25 for our Watch Party Video demonstration using Zoom.
The Zoom meeting will be launched at 6:30PM. Folks can sign in then and explore Zoom and socialize with other members. Then at 7:00 PM we will begin Jimmy’s video demonstration.
We want to get more members involved in our virtual events, so WGNC is reinventing our monthly gallery as a show & tell, where you can bring your ideas, issues and even shop disasters as well as finished works.
Our first two virtual galleries brought in some seriously amazing work from our members, to the point where we were getting worried some folks might be getting intimidated that their own efforts weren't up to a certain standard.
One of the most often asked questions in our gallery presentations and when displaying turned art is "How did you get that finish." This is a bit of a risky topic because most turners have their go-to finish that they are comfortable with to give the desired result. Many newer turners however struggle with finishing and the steps required to achieve a quality finish.
In this 20-minute YouTube video, WGNC President Steve Criscenzo goes through the steps he uses to achieve a consistent finish on his pieces.
It appears the NCSU Crafts Center will remain closed for the summer session, but we are making plans to help keep club activities going in the coming weeks and months.
The details are still coming together, but our intent is to provide at least 3 monthly activities on Thursday nights: The usual 2nd-Thursday club meeting and demo, a meeting solely for sharing the virtual gallery offerings, and another for either a video watch party or smaller breakout-sized demo.
Here's what we have so far, and please note items are subject to change as options become available. All activities start at about 7pm, but any variations will be included in our newsletter.
